History of Orthodontics — From Origins to Modern Appliances

The Origins of Modern Orthodontics

Orthodontics, as a separate branch of dentistry specializing in the correction of incorrect tooth and jaw positioning, took shape around the 1850s through the efforts of Norman Kingsley — the first to apply extraoral traction, and therefore considered the first inventor of special orthodontic appliances.

The first professional association of orthodontists appeared in America at the beginning of the 20th century under the leadership of Edward Angle — another iconic figure in the history of orthodontics.

From Primitive Appliances to Modern Technologies

The first appliances used in orthodontics extended beyond the oral cavity and resembled instruments of torture more than medical devices. Fortunately, in the last hundred years the situation has changed dramatically.

Modern orthodontics uses:

  • Metal, ceramic, sapphire and lingual braces
  • Transparent polycarbonate aligners
  • Trainers and orthodontic plates for children
  • Mini-implants for fixing constructions
  • Digital diagnostics and 3D scanning
