Dental Hygiene Myths We Still Believe
Myth 1: Baby Teeth Don't Need Care
One of the most dangerous misconceptions. Some parents believe that since the dentition will be replaced anyway, daily hygiene is unnecessary. Or that letting cavities destroy the baby tooth will make it fall out faster, making room for the permanent one.
This is a serious error. First, children need to be introduced to oral hygiene from an early age — if they are not taught to care for baby teeth, they will most likely resist cleaning permanent teeth too. Second, when a baby tooth decays, bacteria accumulate that can affect the bud of the permanent tooth and even penetrate the bone tissue. This can lead to incorrect development or even loss of permanent teeth, bite disorders and serious inflammation in the oral cavity.
Myth 2: A Harder Toothbrush Cleans Better
It cannot be stated categorically that harder toothbrushes are better or worse. The choice of toothbrush should be based on the individual characteristics of teeth and gums.
- For sensitive enamel and gums, as well as periodontal inflammation — soft toothbrushes are recommended.
- For strong enamel and gums, but with increased plaque formation or for smokers — a harder toothbrush may be indicated.
The best solution is to consult a dentist, who will recommend the optimal option after examination. At Orto Clinic Chisinau, our team also advises on dental hygiene and prevention matters.
