When Should Your Child First See an Orthodontist

What Is the Right Age for a Child's First Orthodontic Visit

The timing of the first orthodontic visit depends on each child's individual situation. If there are obvious signs of malocclusion, a child should be evaluated by an orthodontist at 3–4 years of age — when the primary dentition is fully formed. Early diagnosis allows for correction before problems worsen.

Visible Signs of Malocclusion in Children

  • Excessive protrusion of the upper or lower jaw
  • Crowded or misaligned teeth
  • Extra teeth (hyperdontia) or displaced teeth (dystopia)
  • Large gaps between teeth (diastema and trema)

Indirect Signs of Developing Malocclusion

Sometimes a developing malocclusion can be identified through indirect signs: predominantly oral breathing, changes in facial profile, visible lip and chin tension when swallowing, or facial asymmetry. Children with malocclusion may complain of difficulty chewing, biting their tongue or cheeks, jaw pain, and frequent headaches.

When to Schedule the First Consultation

If you do not notice any obvious problems, the first orthodontic consultation is recommended at 5–7 years of age, after the first permanent teeth have erupted. At Orto Clinic in Chisinau, we offer comprehensive orthodontic consultations for children with digital diagnostics and personalized treatment plans.
