How Bite Affects Facial Appearance
Bite and the Hollywood Smile
One of the main factors determining the general impression a person makes is their smile. The Hollywood smile is not just about white, straight teeth — an equally important factor is correct bite, meaning the proper closure of the jaws (occlusion). Different occlusion disorders, unlike crooked teeth, significantly change the appearance of the face.
How Each Bite Type Changes the Face
Distal bite — visually diminishes the chin and enlarges the upper lip. The face takes on a surprised or hesitant expression. Left untreated, it can lead to drooping corners of the mouth.
Deep bite — creates the visual impression of a smaller face through strong overlap of the lower incisors by the upper ones.
Mesial bite — creates a "heavy" chin appearance, as the lower jaw protrudes significantly forward.
Open and crossbite — cause facial asymmetry. When front or side teeth don't close, the lips dry out and the facial expression appears surprised.
Associated Problems
Some types of malocclusion are accompanied by a gummy smile and temporomandibular joint dysfunction — with clicking when closing the jaw, headaches and bruxism.
If you notice bite problems, consult an orthodontist at Orto Clinic Chisinau for a complete evaluation and personalized treatment plan.
